スー、――進むか留まるか――選択肢は一つしかないの――このごろ意見が食い違ってばかり、これがきっと最後になります。
わたしがひとりぼっちになるから置いておけないなんて心配はしなくていいから。心に描いて愛していたものを捨て去ることなんかよくあるし――ときにはお墓に、ときには死よりもずっと悲惨な忘却に――そんなふうに心から血を流してばかりいるから、血が出ても気にならないし、それ以前の痛みにまた一つ痛みをつけ加えて、一日の終わりに口にするだけ――泡がはじけた！って。
子どもでしかなかったころにこんな事態が起こったとしたらひどく悲しいだろうし、家族のそばでよちよち歩きしていたころならきっと泣いていたに違いないし、棺桶に収まったとしても、目は乾き、心は干涸らびた燃えかすになり、燃え尽きた方がましなくらいだと思う。
スー、――わたしはこれまで生きてきました。
永遠に変わらない天国の象徴をかつて夢見たことがあります。たとえそれを奪われても、わたしは一人で留まるつもりだし、あの最期の日が訪れても、あなたを愛するイエス・キリストも、わたしのことは知らないと言うでしょう――我が子を見捨てたりしないような、もっと暗い精霊がいるんです。
わたしに分け与えてくれた人などほとんどいません。わたしの方から愛しても、その心酔のあまりに、みんなわたしからは距離を置くから――わたしは終わったことをつぶやくだけ。波は広大な青のなかに溶け、今日、人が沈んだことを、わたし以外は誰も知らない。二人でこれまで楽しく歩いて来たけれど――多分これがわたしたちの分岐点――歌いながら通り過ぎなさいスー、遠くの丘までわたしは歩き続けるから。

Adrift! A little boat adrift!
And night is coming down!
Will no one guide a little boat
Unto the nearest town?
So Sailors say --on yesterday --
Just as the dusk was brown
One little boat gave up its strife
And gurgled down and down.
So angels say --on yesterday --
Just as the dawn was red
One little boat --o'erspent with gales --
Retrimmed its masts --redecked its sails --
And shot --exultant on!
